Friday Four - Information That Shapes My Business Mind: 5-27-16

Published: Fri, 05/27/16

Happy Memorial Day Weekend, everyone.  Here's my weekly installment of the Friday-Four to take you in to the holiday break.

First things first, here's a link to my blogging efforts from this week:

My Friday-FOUR

Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage CSP - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:

  • 5 Ways to Become a Master Storyteller - The opening sentence of this piece states: "A great brand is a story well-told." I couldn't agree more. I especially enjoyed recommendation #3, emphasizing the importance of "sharing the ugly" as you tell your story. The best lessons I can share based on my time operating CSP are often those that I've learned the hard way.
  • Why Marketing Needs to Promote the Product, Not the Promise - If you make your living selling performance enhancement services or fitness instruction in general, you'd better get on board with this mentality. The moment I start telling baseball dads that our program "guarantees velocity gains" will be the moment that our brand image begins moving downhill.  We'll give you the tools you need to improve the velocity of your fastball, but unless you do the hard work outside of our gym (diet/rest/etc.), you're never going to accomplish your goal of throwing gas.
  • 4 Lessons on Work Culture that I Learned at Google - Google is well-known for it's impressive work culture, so it should come as no surprise that their former employees are recreating the environment and practices elsewhere. The second lesson in this piece regarding the benefits of "all-hands meetings" resonated with me, as we've recently dramatically improved the productivity of our weekly staff meeting by spending roughly 90% of our time focusing on just a single concept or project.
  • Leaders: Who's Shaping Your Company's Culture? - Every once in a while I like to share an article that I disagree with, as I think it can prompt fascinating discussion. This writer argues that executives who allow their team to dictate company culture are at fault. While I think this argument can hold water during the early stages of a business, I believe that fitness facilities such as CSP will become unmemorable and irrelevant if owners like myself and Eric are unwilling to hire younger coaches who can connect with our target market and "set the tone", for lack of a better term.  We can guide culture, but will typically shy away from firmly dictating it.

Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
