Friday Four - Information That Shapes My Business Mind: 6/3/16

Published: Fri, 06/03/16

College athletes are pouring back in to CSP every day and we're officially back to "the busy season."  It feels good to be a little overwhelmed by client attendance again. Despite the headaches that come with doubling our gym's foot traffic in just about a 48-hour span, I've had the opportunity to consume a whole bunch of great material during my down time that I'm excited to share with you this week.

First things first, here's a link to my blogging efforts from this week:

  • 5 Reasons We Don't Ask Employees to Sign a Non-Compete Clause - Fitness professionals are often surprised to hear that CSP strength coaches are not asked to sign a non-compete as part of the terms of their employment agreement.  While I'm not entirely against the use of NCC's, I've got a number of reasons why they're not appropriate for our business. This article covers the top five.

My Friday-FOUR

Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage CSP - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:

  • Don't Just "Show Up" - My buddy Jordan Syatt (a former CSP intern) recently took on the responsibility of coaching Gary Vaynerchuk in a full-time format. "Gary-V" is happens to be one of my biggest influences as it relates to brand management, so I am thrilled to see that Jordan has decided to maintain a daily blog featuring a single quick idea or concept presented to him by Gary in between sets in the weight room. ALL of my readers should bookmark this one. I also want to take credit for assisting with his hashtag, #thatswhatveesaid. I actually threw the idea on the table as we chatted on a flight from KC to Boston earlier this spring. I guess I have my occasional moments of creativity.
  • 7 Behaviors of Successful People - I'd encourage fitness facility owners to replace the word "people" in the title of this post with "gym owners" and then pay close attention to behavior number 2. If you can learn to focus on the journey instead of the destination, you'll actually enjoy the most memorable parts of building a business like CSP instead of only concerning yourself with where you hope to get.
  • 5 Things To Do This Weekend To Make Monday the Most Productive Day of the Week - When it comes to productivity and consistency, I'm all about to-do lists. This being said, "to-do's" don't need to be limited to work-related tasks. This article does a nice job of reminding us that it takes momentum from a quality mental health weekend to ensure a massively productive Monday, and gives us all some simple yet important items to add to our list of down-time goals.
  • How Seth Godin Manages His Life - Rules, Principals and Obsessions - I listened to this podcast hosted by Tim Ferriss because Seth Godin is right up there with Gary-V on my "must-follow" list. It did not disappoint. I was especially fascinated by Seth's take on the difference between being a "freelancer" and an "entrepreneur," and how he suggests you go about determining which of the two you happen to be.

Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
