Life is
good.
The leaves are turning. Tom Brady returns to the football field this weekend. Playoff baseball is in full-swing. And, most importantly, I'm (kind of) sleeping again now that our infant is figuring out this whole "sleep at night" thing.
More sleep means more energy and time to read, allowing me to consume some great business-specific content this past week.
Let's start with my own
blog post which went up yesterday:
- Gym Owner Musings - Installment #2: As I mention in this post, I’ve accumulated a boatload of random lessons learned in (nearly) a decade of operating a fitness facility. Some warrant entire presentations,
podcasts, and blog posts; others carry plenty of value but can fit within the confines of a 140-character Tweet. This one covers my thoughts on training model selection, efficient marketing for your gym, and learning by doing.
My Friday FOUR
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I
manage CSP - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- Numbers Don't Matter, Influence Does: Gary Vaynerchuck's aggressive tone and harsh language may not resonate with everyone, but his
message is usually immensely valuable. This is why I encourage those of you who don't love his act to consume his material in a written format. I couldn't agree more with his approach to building a following: "Reach does not equal value and follower count doesn’t mean people are listening. We need to stop focusing on optimizing the number of views and instead concentrate on making each one of those viewers care about your brand."
- 8 Ways to Reduce Your Company's Expenses: Lists like this tend to be a little too generic to qualify as 100% applicable to your business, but just a single useful takeaway can mean thousands of dollars of savings. We've applied the fifth and eighth tips on this list in the past with fantastic results. Every dollar counts when it comes
to running a small business.
- Do what you're good at, or...: The best thing about Seth Godin's blog is the speed with which you can consume it. He doesn't waste time with needlessly extending a blog post if he can get one great message across in
200 words. This quote will tell you everything you need to know about his take on the "follow your passion" mindset: "The market is selfish. It doesn't care a whit about how hard you're working or how difficult the task is."
- These Are the Best Times to Post on Social Media: Did you know that there is
technically a best time of day and day of the week to post your content on social media? This post might make you think twice about uploading that amazingly insightful blog you've been working on at 9:00pm on a Saturday.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
