Friday Four - TONS of recommended reading, Leadership Insights, & More: 10/28/16

Published: Fri, 10/28/16

This week's Friday Four has a distinctly NFL flavor to it, featuring a pair of posts that reference our country's most popular sport. I've also got a whole bunch of good books to put on your radar and a series of rants from my former business partner, Tony Gentilcore.

Let's get started with my most recent blog post:

  • Why We Don't List Our Prices on the Internet: Creativity strikes at unexpected moments. My favorite professional sports team, the New England Patriots, inspired this week’s blog post. Please allow me to explain how NFL game preparation strategy can serve as a useful analogy in explaining my rationale for not listing the prices of our service offerings on CSP's website.
My Friday FOUR

Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage CSP - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
  • A Lesson in Leadership: I recently finished reading Leaders Eat Last (Simon Sinek) and this past week's post-game press conferences for both the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals head coaches would have served as the perfect illustration of effective and ineffective leadership styles in this book. It is easy to see why Pete Carroll is frequently referred to as a "player's coach."
  • 4 Lessons About Handling Stressed Customers That I learned From Being a Mover: Running a fitness business probably doesn't qualify as delivering a "high-emotion service" (although you could make the argument), but still come across our fair share of clients who arrive while in the midst of a bad day. All four of the lessons outlined in the piece are immensely valuable to gym owners who occasionally encounter an emotional client.
  • 51 Books Every Gym Owner Should Read: I hate to be redundant, but this week I have to share a list of suggested reading within my list of suggested reading. Mark Fisher reads more than any person I've ever met. When he recommends a book, I buy it that day. Not kidding. Go buy one of these (or 51 of them) now.
  • Spitballing Some Sage Advice to Fitness Professionals: I loved Tony Gentilcore's rant in this post regarding unexperienced fitness professionals who declare that they have "expert status." It reminded me of a line I recently highlighted in Essentialism (Greg McKeown) that read: "Technology has lowered the barrier for others to share their opinion about what we should be focusing on. It is not just information overload; it is opinion overload."
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
