Friday 4 - Instagram Anticipating Change, The Cost of Hiring Brilliant Jerks, and More: 3/24/17

Published: Fri, 03/24/17

Let's start this edition of the Friday-4 with the blog I've published on my site this week:
  • You Don't Need Flashy on Day One - You Need Cash Flow - One of the biggest mistakes I see new and aspiring gym owners make is confusing wants with needs as it relates to equipment and technology. I get it that you want fancy equipment, but do you need it to deliver an effective and memorable experience at a time when your business is strapped for cash?
My Friday FOUR:

Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
  • The 6 Most Important Times When Your Employees Are Watching You - Most of us got into the gym ownership game with the mentality that we were thrilled to finally work for ourselves...not to turn the tables and be the employer. I have found myself in each of the six scenarios outlined in this article. In some cases I handled myself admirably, and in others I faltered. While I will never expect to be perfect, having an awareness of the importance of my actions in these moments will allow me to improve continuously moving forward.
  • How Instagram Changed Before It Had To - It took me five years to come around to the idea of adding strength camps to CSP's service arsenal because I was so fiercely attached to the idea that we were "the individualized programming guys" and could not afford to sully that reputation by offering any form of generic programming. In the end, I was kicking myself for waiting. This was the same issue Instagram faced when deciding whether or not to stray away from their mandatory square formatting of images in their early days. Fortunately for them (and all of us users), the decision was made to evolve. Give this one a read to learn why and how the team at Instagram is attempting to stay ahead of the curve while staying true to their roots.
  • Hiring Brilliant Jerks Can Cost You the Culture That Brought Success - My buddy Alex owns a gym in New York and earlier this week he reached out to discuss "strategies for hiring accomplished and experienced trainers." When the dust settled on our conversation, the outcome was simple: stop worrying about finding rockstars and begin the process of creating your own. Established coaches bring firm stances on programming and business philosophy, clients who are unfamiliar with your culture, and a series of other headaches. This post from Entrepreneur Magazine does a nice job of hammering the point home.
  • The Art of Getting Your Shit Together - My buddy Mike Connelly wrote this guest post for Tony Gentilcore's sight and I think everyone can apply the takeaways. I especially liked his point about systemizing your approach to organizing tasks with the tools of your choice. Some people manage their to-do lists with action day planners, while others keep it simple with the notepad feature on their phone. I am partial to Evernote, which I use for everything from managing my to-do list, to drafting blogs and preparing this newsletter over the course of the week. Long story short, the key to productivity is actually having an established approach and sticking to it.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
