Friday 4 - Improve Your Presentation Skills, Double Down on Personal Branding, and More: 4/7/17

Published: Fri, 04/07/17

Let's start this edition of the Friday-4 with the blog I've published on my site this week:
My Friday FOUR:

Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
  • This Brilliant Harvard Professor Will Change The Way You Think About Products - Traditional marketing strategy could become a thing of the past if businesses begin to embrace an approach that focuses on the job the product will be doing instead of getting caught up in demographics and attributes of a targeted client. Even if marketing isn't interesting to you, read this one so that you can learn why McDonalds Milkshakes are designed to be thicker in the morning than they are in the afternoon.
  • Why Personal Branding is the Recruiting Secret You're Missing - If you're familiar with my material, you've probably seen me say on more than one occasion that putting Eric's name on our business is a decision we often wish we could go back in time and change. What I would never change is the time, energy and resources he put into developing his own personal brand for all of the reasons outlined in this piece. Here's a great reminder: "Your personal brand encompasses the offerings you deliver; the assortment of values you advocate for; and the unique resources, skills and knowledge you bring to the table."
  • Why Business Owners Should Never Pay Their Bills On Time - Something tells me very few gym owners realize that they are in the position to request cash discounts from their vendors. Your clients have likely asked you on more than one occasion what your "cash price" would be for training, and you should consider implementing this approach as well to stretch the financial resources of your operation. It is also worth investigating whether or not your vendor payables are negotiable. I'm not telling you not to pay your bills...just be strategic about how and when you do so.
  • 6 Ways to Look More Confident During a Presentation - Presenting in front of an audience is anxiety-inducing for most of us. This piece touches on a little bit of research showing that your body language has a significant impact on the way your message is received. While great body language is probably not enough to off-set terrible material, it can definitely take great content to a whole new level. Don't make the mistake of ignoring this one if you're thinking to yourself "I don't give presentations so this doesn't matter." Instructing fitness is presenting.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
