Quick note - We're down to three remaining slots for the Business Building Mentorship that Eric and I
are hosting in June. If you're interested, you can get a more thorough description of the event here.
Let's start this edition of my Friday-4 with any and all content I've been associated with this week: - 3 Lessons Learned in a Year of Gym Ownership - My former consulting client, Peter Meakin, contributed this great guest post discussing the most impactful lessons he took away from his
first full year as a gym owner. I also had to learn these lessons on-the-fly back in the second half of 2007 as we got going at CSP.
- FitCast Episode 437 - This was my third
appearance on the Fitcast and we covered a ton of ground relating to fitness business. Give it a listen if you're interested in my take on personal brand development, important questions to ask yourself before opening a second gym, and more.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog
material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy: - 10 Essential Questions For Building A Business - Full disclosure: We never prepared a business plan when getting CSP off the ground and running. This was partially because we had more than three dozen of Eric's existing clients standing in front of us with cash in hand ready to train, and partially because we intended to finance the endeavor entirely out of pocket. If I had to pull one together today, this
post by Michael Keeler would serve as my blueprint for attacking the process.
- Know Your Worth, And Then Ask For It - This TED Talks Business
video (8-minutes in length) illustrates how important it is to sell your services with conviction if you know that you bring measurable value to your clients. Remember, it isn't bragging if you're talking about how you can help the person in front of you and aligning an appropriate pricing structure with that message. "Doubts and fears are natural and normal. But they don't define our value, and they shouldn't limit our earning potential."
- Real World: Disrupting The Status Quo (Podcast) - A Los Angeles-based television reporter once said "the real world didn't just change television...it changed us." I don't know about you, but I love learning the origins of concepts that completely disrupted
their market. This new podcast sponsored by Virgin, titled The Venture, explores all kinds of fascinating business stories. This week's edition covering the Real World didn't disappoint. Those of you who were locked in to cable television in the 90's are going to love revisiting this time in your life.
- Babson College 2015 Undergraduate Commencement Speech (Kevin Colleran) - In the spring of 2015 my college roommate and close friend, Kevin Colleran, delivered the commencement speech to the undergraduates at our alma-mater, Babson College. In it, he explained why he chose to deflect his entrepreneurial inner monologue demanding the pursuit of self-employment and accepted a position as the sixth employee
at Facebook. During his time with the company, he came to learn that you can enjoy the entrepreneurial perks of self-employment while still reporting to another professional. Watch this one start to finish before quitting the gym you work at because you believe it is the only way to be an entrepreneur.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
-
Pete
