Let's start this edition of my Friday-4 with any and all content I've been associated with this
week: - Gym Owner Musings - Installment #5 - Another batch of my random thoughts on Facebook advertising, embracing a lean startup approach, and minimizing complexities in our
gym's training model.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness.
Enjoy: - The 1% Rule: Why a Few People Get Most of the Rewards - You've heard of the Pareto Principle, right? It's the unofficial rule that 20% of the invested input is responsible for 80% of the results obtained. For example, many business owners are fond of
saying that 80% of their revenues come from just 20% of their clients. In this piece, James Clear does a fantastic job of explaining the power of accumulative advantage and how being just the slightest bit more effective than your competition can lead to outsized rewards over time. (Shoutout to F4 reader Chase Schaap for putting this one on my radar)
- Tony Robbins Says a Kid's Future Success Depends on How You Talk to Them - I initially clicked on this article because I've got two growing boys running around my home, and figured I might find a pointer or two that will make me a more effective teacher to them. I quickly realized that the suggestion that I
communicate with children in a way that supports a growth mindset not only applies to the way I parent, but also in the way we connect with the youth athletes in our gym. Our best clients are the ones who embrace the training process, celebrate incremental gains, and avoid any mentality that their potential is limited to their innate gifts (a fixed mindset).
- 5 Easy Exercises to Find Your Brand's Voice - Four years of undergraduate business school, a one-year intensive MBA program, and ten years of business ownership under my belt and no one has ever presented me with the challenge of "personifying" my brand. I liked this challenge and the four to follow in this quick read. Take extra note
of the bonus pointers at the end which focus on consistency in the style and tone of your messaging once you've finally found your brand's voice.
- 6 Things New Grads Should Know Before Joining a Startup - This piece was obviously geared toward students entertaining the idea of chasing notoriety and wealth by jumping in early with the next big tech startup, but the reality is that most private sector gyms function like startups based on the six warnings outlined here. Minimal (or zero) benefits? Check. Expectations of long hours and a 24/7 environment? Check. Lack of resources and financial uncertainty? Check and....check. This one could have been titled "6
Things Personal Trainers Need to Know Before Leaving Equinox to Start Their Own Gym."
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
- Pete
