Friday 4 -Inside Look at CSP, Responding to Negative Feedback, and Much More: 4/21/17

Published: Fri, 04/21/17

I've got a pretty cool event to put on your radar if you're a gym owner. Eric and I are going to be offering a one-day business mentorship at CSP Massachusetts on Friday, June 16th. This is going to be an opportunity to get a complete understanding of how we have developed the CSP business model and brand over the past ten years. If you're interested, you can get a more thorough description of the event here.

Let's start this edition of my Friday-4 with the blog I've published on my site this week:
  • A Lesson From My Dad That Changed The Way I Compete - As I work through the struggle of parenting/raising a couple of crazy little boys, I am beginning to really appreciate the job my dad did along the way. Check out this quick memory that I reference from time to time as I chat with other gym owners.
My Friday FOUR:

Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
  • Responding to Feedback You Disagree With - Very few of us know how to effectively receive and process constructive feedback. I'll be the first to admit that my initial irrational response often gets the best of me. This piece makes a great case for the "sleep on it" rule, and the need for ditching the defensive tone as you focus on asking clear and curious questions when receiving these insights.
  • Reflections on Six Years of Operating a Successful Gym - My buddy Dave Thomas packed this blog post with important takeaways that you can only learn from time in the trenches. As crazy as it sounds, there really aren't that many gym owners in our field who can say they've been running a continuously growing fitness business for six consecutive years, so information like this is rare and valuable. My favorite quote: "Culture is the subconscious of your gym."
  • 6 Ways to Keep Your Millennial Employees from Quitting - This title irritated me enough to warrant a click. My initial reaction: "Forget trying to keep my millennials from quitting - they can leave if they don't want to be here." I obviously lost sight of the fact that I am technically a millennial, and had also not read the article yet. Once I did, I came to learn that the numbers don't actually support millennials' reputation for being job hoppers. In the end, I realized that these "6 ways to keep millennials from quitting" were really just 6 great rules for retaining any staff members.
  • 43 Words You Should Cut From Your Writing Immediately - The sheer volume of mistakes I continue to make in my writing were really brought to the forefront in my mind as I read this post. I can't cut 43 bad habits out all at once, but I intend to chip away slowly. Make sure to bookmark this one if you're blogging or creating other forms of content regularly.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
