Friday 4 -"Luck," or Preparation? Attacking this Concept and Much More: 5/5/17

Published: Fri, 05/05/17

As I type this, I am sitting in the back of the room at the 2017 Fitness Summit, an event held annually in Kansas City. Tomorrow I will have the opportunity to take the stage and share stories of some of the best, and some of the worst decisions we've made in ten years of running Cressey Sports Performance.

With plenty of down time between flights, presentations, and scheduled event socials, I've had the chance to pull together some interesting articles for this edition of my Friday-4. Let's start with the blog I've published on my site this week:
  • Accumulating "Biz" Skills - My first season contributing fitness business insights to the Strength Faction is coming to an end and I have prepared a blog covering three initiatives that the Faction community can put into action immediately to continue their development as fitness pros. These takeaways apply to any of my typical readers.
My Friday FOUR:

Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
  • Why My Company Serves Free Breakfast to All Employees - This piece highlights the merits of picking up the breakfast tab for your entire team on a daily basis, which sounds great. However, what really caught my eye was a "paired programming" concept that is continuously referenced in the text. I think this team-based work structure could be especially valuable to a gym like CSP where client programming is often the shared responsibility of multiple staff members thanks to the unpredictable nature of our clients' schedules.
  • How To Create a Standout Personal Brand - Put in the time to justify your status as a recognizable industry personality, focus on authenticity, and relentlessly develop meaningful relationships. When it comes to the do's and don'ts of personal branding, this is a checklist I can get behind.
  • Is Your Company Like United Airlines? - You're likely nodding your head in disapproval at the idea of "being like United Airlines." In reality, you just may be like them in some way if you embrace the concept of scientific management. There are a number of gym owners who've taken the systemization of their business to the extreme, resulting in scripted client interaction and a complete inability to address real time challenges with any level of creativity. Empower your front-line employees (the coaches in your gym) to tap into instinct as they face customer service challenges and you'll be a big step ahead of United Airlines as it relates to client relations.
  • Six Simple Habits of "Lucky" People - Some article titles pull me like a moth toward a flame, and this one caught my eye because I hate it when people attribute the success of others to "luck." Fortunately, this post does a nice job of illustrating six ways that people can prepare in a fashion that will make them more likely to stumble upon their good fortune. Long story short, most of the time, we create our own luck.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
