Friday 4 - My Favorite Article To-Date and Much More: 5/12/17

Published: Fri, 05/12/17

Quick note - We're down to three remaining slots for the Business Building Mentorship that Eric and I are hosting in June. If you're interested, you can get a more thorough description of the event here.

Let's start this edition of my Friday-4 with the blog I've published on my site this week:
  • Want A White-Collar To-Do List? Start With Some Blue-Collar Work - This isn't the first time I've written about the importance of accumulating sweat equity in your business, and it will not be the last. Check out this post to learn about a fascinating new CSP client start up, and some valuable lessons that can be applied in your business.
My Friday FOUR:

Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
  • Masters of Scale (Podcast Episode - Handcrafted) - I'm hooked after just two episodes of this new podcast from LinkedIn co-founder, Reid Hoffman. This one discusses the backstory of Airbnb. I'll bet you didn't know that the billionaire co-founders of this business once went door-to-door, sleeping on the couches of their initial users as they worked to gather user insights during the early stages of their business...
  • The C-Suite's Next Mandate: Social Media Literacy - In 2010 only 36% of CEO's were actively participating in social media. Fast-forward to today and that number exceeds 80%. That's a huge change in under a decade. This post makes a good case for all executives being literate on the social platforms that are relevant to their business, instead of simply outsourcing the task to an employee and forgetting about it. Take note of the specific recommendation that all team members maintain a familiarity with social media to ensure that the business as a whole continues to feel current and in-tune with industry trends.
  • Obsess Over Your Customers, Not Your Rivals - This is my favorite Friday 4 article in recent memory. I even went so far as to print this piece and highlight several insights that you'll eventually see in my social media content and future presentations. Learn to reframe your perception of the competition and you'll eventually render "rivals" irrelevant. My favorite quote: "The question is not who your competition is but what it is. And the answer is this: Your competition is any and every obstacle your customers encounter along their journeys to solving the human, high-level problems your company exists to solve."
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
