Friday 4 - Free Resources from Google, Productivity Hacks & More: 8/18/17

Published: Fri, 08/18/17

I listened to more than six hours of Christmas music yesterday. It was as rough as it sounds.

I'm currently enjoying a few days off in New Hampshire with my family, and one of the child-friendly destinations on our agenda was Santa's Village. We ate fried dough, rode roller coasters, and pretended to be in the holiday spirit for an entire day. With this in mind, I didn't set aside time to publish a blog this week.

Let's start this Friday-4 edition with a throw-back guest post I prepared for Eric Cressey's blog a few years back:
  • How to Stand Out in a Crowded Fitness Industry - Some of the best ways to differentiate yourself in the world of personal training have absolutely nothing to do with your assessment skills or coaching style. Check out these off-the-radar tips if you'd like to build a following in an extremely competitive landscape.
My Friday FOUR:

Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
  • Good Leaders Are Good Learners - I have a tendency of telling myself that it just isn't in my nature to lead or manage in a certain way. Instead of embracing a "it is what it is" mentality, I need to routinely remind myself that I can systematically learn and practice the skills that will make me a better leader. This is as much about shifting my mindset as it is about avoiding my habit of targeting tasks that highlight my strengths.
  • Working on Your Side Hustle? Here Are 3 Habits to Be More Productive - This weekly newsletter, the Thursday blogs, and any business consulting I do for fellow gym owners all fall within the "side hustle" category. When things get busy at work, stress kicks up on the home front, or time simply gets tight, business-specific content creation is the first thing to go. The three tips in this piece are all especially helpful as I play this weekly game of tug-of-war between my side-hustle and everything else.
  • Google Is Giving Away Its Best Tools For Managers Absolutely Free - Deciding to solicit structured feedback from your employees is one thing, but actually having a plan of attack for doing so is a whole other story. The people at Google have taken all of the guess work out of collecting insights from your team and shared all of it for free consumption. Don't skip past these resources if you manage employees. These systems are likely to be part of the reason why Google is widely considered to be the best employer in the land.
  • Yes, It's Accounting, But ASC 606 Could Have a Huge Impact on Your Company - So this piece obviously wasn't written with gym owners in mind, but it is still important since most of us run businesses with recurring revenue streams. Let this one serve as a strong reminder of the complexities of proper accounting. If you don't have a professional managing these responsibilities for your fitness business, you should (happy to make an email intro to my guy if you're looking).
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
