- Gym Owner Musings - Installment #8 - Internship Edition - Does your gym offer an internship program? Do you own a facility that is considering rolling one out? Are you an up and coming
strength coach who's kicking around the idea of applying for an internship? I've got a little something for all three demos in this new edition of "Gym Owner Musings."
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think
differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- Why Companies Will Pay
For Experts Rather Than Employees - Here's a great argument for the importance of making your own skill set both unique and clearly publicized. "The current landscape is and will continue to favor self-promoting extroverts that can network and show their value to companies." Don't feel comfortable with self-promotion? Tough luck, my friend. You can either create a unique area of expertise and begin communicating your value to the
world, or you can sit back and watch the people around you do it.
- This Nordic Company's 4 Secrets to Hiring (And Keeping) Great Talent
Anywhere - We implement secrets one and two from this post with great success in our internship program here at Cressey Sports Performance. I bring a full-time coach in the room for 100% of our internship interviews so that I can ensure that we will have a certain level of chemistry on the training floor once an internship program starts. This process also brings some accountability to team members other than myself when it comes to
selecting candidates.
- There Are Two Types of Performance - But Most Organizations Only Focus on One - It is extremely
important for gym owners to understand the difference between Tactical and Adaptive Performance. Some entrepreneurs have become so systemized in their operational approach that they effectively eliminated any room for creativity in their business. If offering individualized training material is your competitive advantage, you should probably be openminded to the reality that an adaptive selling strategy will outperform a tactical scripted pitch the majority of the
time.
- If You Aren't Googling Yourself You're Being an Idiot - I had a great conversation this morning with a current intern who is interested in functioning primarily as an online coach following her time with us. I asked her what would appear if I
were to search her name on google, and she informed me that it would be an article about her time as a school principal. Just saying that out loud was enough for her to realize she has some work to do if she is interested in positioning herself as a credible online training option. This piece from Sol Orwell outlines some great strategies for taking control of what appears when people decide to search the internet to learn more about you. Reputation management cannot be overlooked.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
