Friday 4 - The Difference Between Audience and Community & More 1/26/18

Published: Fri, 01/26/18

Hey!

It's Friday. Hopefully my weekly email serves as a pleasant reminder that you've survived another busy work week.

I've stumbled upon some good stuff since you last heard from me. Let's take a look at some material discussing crafting effective emails, understanding the difference between an audience and a community, and more.

First, let's start with a blog I published earlier this week on my own site.
  • Shake Up Your Approach to Hiring Coaches - What do you do when you own a gym, need to make a hire, but don't have an internship program to fall back on for screening candidates? Here's a quick and simple idea that may help you to avoid hiring a coach with an approach to fitness that ends up conflicting with your own.
My Friday FOUR:

Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
  • Steve Jobs Knew How to Write an Email - Here's How He Did It - There isn't a day that passes here at CSP where I do not lament the consistently poor attention to detail I see in email correspondence from the athletes we work with. Grammar has been tossed out the window, punctuation appears to be optional, and acronyms have become acceptable replacements for simple phrases like "talk to you soon." It is refreshing to see how clearly and effectively Steve Jobs communicated in the email shared here. The author of this post does a nice job of breaking down exactly how Jobs knocked this message out of the park and shared some valuable insights for all of us.
  • Why Companies and Universities Should Forge Long-Term Collaborations - One of the best ways to populate a strength & conditioning internship program is to establish relationships with local colleges and universities that offer related majors. Once you've got your foot in the door and earn the trust of the influencers at the school, you are likely to see an uptick in applications. This is what was running through my mind when I read the title of this article and decided to click. Ultimately, I came to learn that there is a truly fascinating relationship emerging between the tech industry and academic programs in the Boston area. Give this one a read if you're interested in learning how some of our country's biggest companies are collaborating with local schools to work around dwindling government support for early stage research.
  • The Lesson of Facebook's Hammer Drop? - "The days of relying on someone else’s traffic and calling it community are over." What an important reminder for all of us business owners that there is a dramatic difference between building an audience, and building a community. The former can get pulled right out from under you if you count on a platform that you don't own to connect with it, and the latter is considerably more likely to stand the test of time and endure the unpredictable occasional algorithm change.
  • How Effective is Twitter Promote Mode? We Tested it For 30 Days - I found this breakdown of the Twitter Promote Mode to be particularly informative. If you are feeling like you need a shift from your current exclusively Facebook ads approach to marketing, and actively utilize Twitter, this might be an interesting solution for you. The article states that the promote mode offering is optimal for users possessing 2,000 followers or less, which probably includes most private sector gyms in our segment.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
