Friday 4 - Startup Mistakes to Avoid, Improved Goal-Setting, & More 12/29/17

Published: Fri, 12/29/17

Before I hit you with some business-specific content, I have a random request:

For those of you who have been to London (or live in the area), would you mind shooting me an email to share your "must-see" tourist attractions? I've got a speaking engagement lined up in the UK in a couple of weeks and have managed to carve out a day for nothing but sight seeing. While a day isn't much, I'm sure I can see some good things with a little bit of guidance.

Thanks in advance!

My Friday FOUR:

Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
  • Stop Setting Goals You Don't Actually Care About - There are some nice pointers in this piece if you are targeting specific personal development objectives in the coming year. One of the recommendations is that you make a habit of blocking out specific times to deliberately focus on your goal. I did this in 2017, setting aside 60-minutes every Tuesday morning to curate content for this very newsletter. For the past 52 weeks, I have taken my laptop down the hall to our building's conference room where I am essentially free of distractions every Tuesday morning. It has worked like a charm.
  • 5 Sales Presentation Tips From a Self-Made Millionaire - I suggest you start here if you're interested in tightening up your sales pitch in 2018. I especially liked Part-C of tip #1 discussing the importance of knowing and understanding your competition. My favorite quote: "You can never know too much but you can certainly talk too much." Translation: Understand everything about your competitors, and then fight the urge to speak of their services as you explain your own offerings.
  • Why Hiring For Experience Often Isn't The Right Choice - If you agree with the argument made in this piece, it might be time for you to consider launching an internship program at your gym. We hire exclusively through our program, ensuring that we are able to identify the rising stars and watch them rise to the occasion as we systematically introduce new responsibilities. One point that is not made in the piece, but is worthy of note, is the importance of protecting your culture by promoting from within as opposed to hiring outside superstars. When you bring in an established coach, you also bring in "their way" of doing things. Be cognizant of this if you have worked hard to establish a unique work environment.
  • Just Starting Out? Avoid These 5 Startup Mistakes - While I can't say it was entirely intentional, we avoided all five of these startup mistakes when starting CSP back in 2007. Over time, we learned that we'd dodged a few bullets, and applied a number of the rules outlined in this piece as we got the CSP Florida facility off the ground and running back in 2014.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a happy new year!
