Let's start this week's Friday 4 with a blog published yesterday
on my own sight: - Gym Owner Musings - Installment #10 - In this most recent installment of random thoughts on gym ownership I touch on hiring,
managing roles & responsibilities of founders, and internship program intent.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness.
Enjoy: - Walmart's Problem Isn't Amazon - It's a Lack of Interest in Who Its Customers Are - F4 reader TJ Allan was kind enough to put this one on my radar and point out some parallels here between missteps in Walmart's strategy, and trends in the world of fitness. He explained: "Traditional gyms are jumping into online training because they've seen so much written about it lately, when in reality, the majority of their current members have no interest in online training. They'd be better served if they actually
looked at what their members were buying, talked to them about their wants, and expanded into those categories."
- How to Sell - This was a beefy and unexpected piece from Gary-V. I say unexpected because he's best
known for his take on social media strategy, but I felt like most of the sales suggestions in this article hit the nail on the head. In the end, Gary notes, everything comes down to relationship management. More specifically, it comes down to delivering value first, and asking for sales second.
- Where Are the Movie Stars? - This message from Seth Godin is so important. Accept just about everything you see in marketing and social media for what it really is - an illustration of a nearly unattainable best case scenario. The cover models are never as lean in real life as
they look in the picture, and the businesses are rarely as healthy and profitable as you allow yourself to believe. We're all incredibly flawed, and the sooner we come to terms with that, the sooner we can make progress.
- What Social Media
Isn't Telling You About Owning a Gym - This blog was both fantastic and painful to read at the same time. It was fantastic because it was the product of real world experiences that we all face as gym owners. It was painful because I know Mike Connelly well, and know how much of himself he throws into every professional endeavor. If you're in search of an honest description of the challenges of gym ownership,
look no further than this guest post on Tony Gentilcore's site.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!

Enjoy: - 5 Ways to Get Over Your Fear of Public Speaking - I've had the opportunity to stand in front of some semi-large audiences in recent years and have yet to find a way to entirely eliminate the anxiety that comes with addressing a room full of people. This Harvard Business Review
piece reminded me that this problem will never go away entirely, but that there are some specific useful tools that I can apply to put myself a little more at ease the last time I present. I especially liked the section on being vulnerable.
