Do you take real vacations?
I use
the term "real" because I think many of us don't know what it means to actually turn off our work brain and truly disconnect. I know countless gym owners who can't remember their last vacation day, and wear it like a badge of honor.
As you read this, I am disconnected. My wife and I have packed up the kids and made our way south to Florida for a meaningful weekend spent with the grandparents. We're floating in the pool, eating food that doesn't qualify as clean, and
enjoying a break from the norm. When I get home on Monday, I'll be reenergized and ready to tackle a summer at CSP that is shaping up to be insanely busy.
If you haven't treated yourself to some time to decompress in the past year, consider planning something as early as this afternoon. You wont regret it.
Anyway, I'm back with some recommended reading to either wrap up your week, or kick off your weekend. I hope you enjoy
it.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- How to Manage an Insecure Employee - Insecure is not a term I'd use to describe any of the employees at CSP Massachusetts or Florida. With hundreds of hours exposure to interns prior to a hiring scenario, we are able
to identify the confident (and skilled) coaches and put them on the payroll. This being said, we work with insecure interns just about every day of the week, and some of the tips in this Harvard Business Review article are immensely valuable as we manage their development.
- Comfort Zone: TED Radio Hour - I had blog and presentation ideas piling up in my mind for years before deciding to get over my fear of people thinking I was unintelligent and finally setting up a blog. I was guilty of setting up shop in my comfort zone and choosing not to deviate from the norm. This TED Radio Hour podcast episode outlined a series of strategies you can apply to break your own habit of staying comfortable. My favorite quote from this recording: "All that comfort has ever done is
maintain the status quo."
- How Cold is the Turkey? - Seth Godin once again caught my attention with a blog that totaled
less than fifty words. Take 30-seconds to read this one and seriously consider the four questions he asks. Your answers will tell you a lot about the long-term viability of your business.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
