Let's start this week's Friday 4 with a blog I published on my own sight
yesterday:
- My Landlord Understands the Long Game - I recently re-read the book The Go-Giver and
highlighted this quote: "Make your win about the other person. Go after what he wants. Forget win-win." It reminded me about an interaction I had with our landlord a couple of years back, and the lesson he taught me.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think
differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy: - How Brands Can Take Advantage of Instagram Stories - This article has some useful tips on how you can utilize this incredibly popular component of Instagram to make your business and brand more relatable to current and potential clients. I began using the IG poll feature in the CSP account after reading this one and had great engagement throughout the week.
- New Studies Reveal the Ideal Age to Start a Business, and It's Not in Your 20s - Before you dive in to this one, I should note that the article seemed to end rather abruptly, lacking any sort of clear conclusion. This being said, there is a great message in here for fitness professionals who are creeping into their mid-30's and thinking that the ship has sailed on an opportunity to open a gym. A case is made here for "mid-career" entrepreneurship being considerably less risky than the right-out-of-college
route.
- Austin is the first city in Texas to make paid sick leave mandatory - This new
rule only currently applies to Austin, Texas...however, it isn't hard to imagine a scenario where paid sick leave becomes a mandate in your own state. I'd imagine that the idea of delivering six days of 100% paid sick leave to each of your employees in the coming year would be pretty daunting if you don't do so already. Begin brainstorming how this would impact your business and how you can go about positioning your model to not be compromised by increased payroll figures should this time
come.
- 4 Ways to Build an Innovative Team - I especially enjoyed this
article from the Harvard Business Review because it didn’t paint a picture that requires heading out into the candidate pool and headhunting the industry’s next great innovator. Instead, it highlights strategies that can be employed to identify innovators from within your existing operation. According to this, the secret sauce to innovation is allowing your current team to collaborate, listen, and build strong networks. Sounds doable, right?
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
- Pete
