Here's some recommended reading to either wrap up your
week, or kick off your weekend.
Let's kick things off with a new blog from my site: - Is Semi-Private Training Overrated? - I am a believer in the value of a
well-structured semi-private training model, but I also know better than to think that it is the only solution that gym owners should consider offering. This blog post makes a case for staying the course if you have a full personal training schedule and think that you should make the jump to a new format.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that
will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy: - The Grand Opening (Podcast) -
This is the first episode of Seth Godin's semi-new podcast, titled Akimbo. In it, Godin discusses the common bad habit of rolling out a new product or service with the mentality that it will help as many people as possible, instead of trying to specifically help AN individual or small demo. I've shared his "first ten" blog in a prior newsletter, and he takes this
concept into further detail in this recording.
- How U.S. Law Needs to Change to Support the Self-Employed and Gig Economy - According to
this article, somewhere between 30-40% of Americans are self-employed in either a full-time or part-time capacity. This trend is expected to continue (and expand) so it would make sense for things like tax code to adjust accordingly to protect nearly half of our population...they haven't. There are some good ideas in here that apply to us owners of small gyms, and the online fitness entrepreneurs who find themselves paying a self-employment tax.
- No One Cares About Your Logo - A couple of years ago I was approached by a gentleman at a fitness conference and asked to evaluate his gym's new logo. It looked fine. Not great, not terrible, just fine. I asked him to tell me a little bit
about his gym..."I haven't opened a gym yet, but I probably will someday." When he was unable to answer my follow-up questions relating to his target market, optimal training format, and programming philosophy, he was stumped each and every time. I told him I thought he was probably focusing on the wrong objectives at this stage in the planning process. This exact feedback is continually reinforced in this article. The takeaway is that logos continue to matter, but shouldn't sit at the
top of your priority list until a number of other decisions are made.
- How Little Social Media Metrics Matter - Sol Orwell did a nice job of illustrating just how misleading social media likes, views, and followers can be when it comes
to identifying successful projects and operations in this blog post.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
- Pete
