Here's some recommended reading (and listening) to either
wrap up your week, or kick off your weekend.
Let's kick things off with a revent blog from my site: My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge
me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy: - The Wrong Bus - This post from Seth Godin applies to firing toxic
employees, abandoning unproductive service offerings, or even quitting a bad book that you're already a couple hundred pages into. In all cases, the longer you wait, the more you're hurting yourself or your operation.
- Why Fitness is the Hot New Marketing Platform and Revenue Stream for Music - This was an interesting (and thorough) look at the intersection of fitness and the music industry that is taking place at this very second. This seems like a good time to remind my fellow gym owners that throwing a personal Spotify account on
the speakers and playing music that is unlicensed in the gym is entirely illegal and opening you up to potential fines. We use Pandora for Business here at CSP, which we've been pleased with.
- Research: To Be a Good
Leader, Start by Being a Good Follower - This Harvard Business Review article makes a compelling case for demonstrating a willingness and propensity to follow before stepping into a leadership role. The problem it doesn't solve, however, is the fact that people are often placed in leadership roles by independent selection panels that never actually have the opportunity to perceive a candidate's ability to influence a group prior to making a
hire. Fascinating read, nonetheless.
- The GaryVee Content Model - This was an interesting look at how Gary Vaynerchuk (more specifically, his team) manages to take a single keynote presentation and spin the material into more content than most of us are capable of producing in a several month span. While professionally recorded keynotes are hard for most of us to deliver, we are all capable of churning out long-form blog posts or informational videos that can be chopped up and redistributed using the strategies outlined in this
slide deck.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
- Pete
