Here's some recommended reading to either wrap up your
week, or kick off your weekend.
Let's kick things off with a blog I published yesterday: - How Do I Know When to Add My First Employee? - This post was inspired by a conversation I had with a current intern regarding mindset heading into opening a gym that will hopefully evolve into something bigger than a one-man
show.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness.
Enjoy: - Why Every Company Needs a Leadership Development Academy - The unemployment rate is now down to 3.7%. It's easy to convince yourself that this number
only applies to cubicle jobs, but it would be wrong to do so. Good strength coaches are as hard find these days as a good computer science major in search of a tech industry job. Let this article be a reminder that it would be a good idea to start a viable internship program in your own gym if you haven't done so already.
- 4 Branding Lessons From Nike's Colin Kaepernick Ad - Nike made the strategic decision to affirm their beliefs by taking a stance on the Kaepernick protest efforts, and it appears to have paid off. I admittedly typically choose to avoid hot-button topics such as politics and religion in my own content, but this article highlighted a plan of attack for those who choose to take
the risk. Whether you liked their approach or not, it is hard to ignore the fact that Nike stock hit an all-time high since releasing the controversial ad, and their revenue increased throughout the month of September.
- This is What You're Getting Wrong About the Negotiation Process - Employ the mindset outlined in this post the next time you find yourself negotiating with a current or future employee, and you're likely to have a healthy relationship moving forward. You can't treat an employee as an adversary on the front end of a negotiation process, and then immediately ask them to embrace a family mentality as it relates to their work
life in the days to follow.
- How to Gracefully Exclude Co-Workers from Meetings, Emails & Projects -
When your fitness business is small and agile, it makes complete sense to have the entire team in the room to discuss strategic initiatives. But what happens when you've got 8 to 10 people on your staff, and certain projects don't require the attention of the whole team? There are some concrete guidelines to follow in this piece regarding managing the message, and expectations in general.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More
importantly, have a great weekend!
- Pete
