Here's some recommended reading to either wrap up your
week, or kick off your weekend.
Let's kick things off with a blog I published yesterday on my own website:
- Gym Owner Musings - Installment #11 - It's been nearly a year since I put together one of my "musings" blog posts featuring random thoughts on gym ownership, so I'm bringing it back this week. Here are some insights on brand positioning, the value of LinkedIn to fit-pros,
and marketing strategy for gyms in the performance sector.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from
outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy: - Seth Godin - This is Marketing (Podcast) - Seth Godin has a new book out this week (same name as this podcast title), and he sat down with the guys
from "Marketing Over Coffee" to discuss. As always, he dropped a bunch of unique thoughts, and told some fascinating stories about his time rethinking marketing while assisting non-profits in India.
- Ed Catmull on how he helped foster creative collaboration at Disney and Pixar - This article discussed some of the challenges that come with merging multiple teams. With turnover being a common problem in the fitness space, these lessons can be valuable to those who manage constantly evolving teams. I especially
appreciated the section discussing the importance of separating the feeling of attack on one's self-worth from a genuine desire to improve the outcome of a project through constructive feedback.
- That 'Bad' Interviewee You Just Talked to May Be the Perfect Match for Your Job
Opening - I am guilty of what this author describes as "pattern matching" during my intern candidate interview and selection process, and it almost cost me an exceptional intern earlier in 2018. Gym owners have a tendency of making hiring decisions based on interviews alone, while undervaluing important factors such as reference checks and testimonials from former colleagues. If you're preparing to make a hire, make sure to observe
the bigger picture before settling purely on the read you got in a face-to-face format.
- Why Every Marketer in 2018 Needs to Be a (Part-Time) Designer - This is an incredibly
informative 52-point list of terms and tools that can make you semi-competent at designing your own visually appealing marketing material. Any gym owner publishing content on image-based platforms such as Instagram would be crazy not to download Canva (free) and give this one a read.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
