Here's some recommended reading (and listening) to either wrap up your week, or kick off your weekend.
Let's start things off with a blog I published this week on my own website, and a podcast I had the pleasure of recording with my buddy Michael Keeler:
- Protecting Your Gym’s Secret Sauce - Worth the Hassle? - People ask me all the time: Don't you feel like you're training your future competition by delivering a comprehensive internship program? Is it a bad idea to share informational videos discussing your assessment and programming
strategies?
My answer is typically "no...and no." This blog explains why.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- How a Screaming Boss Helped Steve Blank Develop His Brilliant Startup Philosophy - While I'm not a proponent of the approach to leadership showcased in this story, I love the takeaway. The primary lesson learned here is the importance of putting yourself in your clients' world to fully
understand their needs. We practiced this habit just this week, taking our weekly staff in-service off-site to see our pitchers and hitters get their live work in at the local batting cage. This allowed us to get one step closer to fully understanding the physical demands of their day-to-day outside of the gym.
- When is it appropriate to give up on a goal? - When it comes to goal-setting, I have a habit of tiptoeing the line between ambitious and delusional, so this article was helpful. If you're already feeling bad about failing to maintain some of the habits you established for yourself coming into
2019, reframe your mindset using this quote: "Think about life as a series of experiments to determine which goals are worth pursuing in the first place."
- How I Built This: JetBlue Airways (podcast) - If you're a longtime reader of this newsletter you know I'm a sucker for a big-business founder's story. If you listen to this one you'll realize David Neeleman accomplished and learned more in his 20's than most of us will in a lifetime. You'll also
probably come to the conclusion that this guy is apparently insanely difficult to work with/for, and could use a bit more self-awareness. There are some great lessons in this recording relating to the importance of accruing career capital in your field and identifying untapped opportunity in an already saturated space.
- Why You Should Work Less and Spend More Time on Hobbies - Seems to me that in the fitness industry it is extremely common to blend your personal and professional lives while outside of the gym. You often spend your free time with your colleagues, struggling to discuss anything other than fitness
and happenings within the field. I personally off-set this habit to a small degree by playing co-ed indoor soccer every Wednesday night. This habit allows me to socialize with people who don't work in a gym every day, and take my mind off of baseball, lead-gen, and all things gym ownership. Read this great HBR article if you're feeling like work has taken over your life and may need a kick in the pants to pick up a new hobby.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend!
- Pete
