Here's some recommended reading to either wrap up your week, or kick off your weekend.
Let's start things off with a blog I published this week on my own website:
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking (book) - I picked up a copy of this book in preparation for a presentation I will be delivering tomorrow. While the information inside was hardly innovative in nature, I found the attention to detail on proper execution of the basics of public
speaking to be useful. If you're looking for suggestions on slide design, what to wear on the day of the event, and even the recommended optimal font size and color, this book is the resource you're looking for.
- An Exercise in Patience with Ben Bruno (Podcast) - I'd have to rank my friend Ben as among the most fascinating fitness professionals in our industry thanks to his quirky personality, shockingly laid back
approach to training A-List celebrities, and his ability to do so out of a garage gym that is about the size of my office. Mix in some quality humor from Chelsea Handler and you've got yourself an entertaining podcast episode.
- Jay-Z's Power Of T-Shaped Leadership - I am terribly fascinated by the concept of a "T-Shaped Person" as introduced in this piece on Jay-Z. This is one of the first places I've ever seen an argument for chasing a specialist status in one realm to allow for expansive
generalization further on down the road in one's career path.
- How to Give Your Team the Right Amount of Autonomy - If you own a growing gym, you're going to need to embrace the idea of delegating often. This shift in mindset occasionally comes with a fear that autonomous employees will suddenly deviate from your desired course and throw your vision for the
business out of order. You'll find great value in this Harvard Business Review article if this sounds like a concern you've been dealing with while scaling your business.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend.
- Pete
