Here's some recommended reading to either wrap up your week, or kick off your weekend.
Let's start things off with a blog I published on my own website:
- Gym Owner Musings -- Installment #17 - Here's a fresh batch of random thoughts in this September edition of G.O. Musings. This one includes ideas on up-selling, learning from online reviews, and more.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- How Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks CEO Transformed Their Toxic Culture in 18 Months - We all receive difficult feedback on our operation from time to time, but how many of us can say we have taken it and fundamentally changed the entire
direction of our organization in as little as a year and a half? Credit to Mark Cuban for empowering the right people to drive change. I'm not talking about a little change here...this business went from 100% while male leadership to 50% female, and 43% persons of color in the blink of an eye. Great stuff.
- 4 Signs Your Company Views You as a High-Potential Employee - I envisioned my up and coming coaches from years past while reading this FastCompany article and realized that I have, in fact, made a habit of doing each of the four things highlighted in this post as an employer.
Read this one closely if you're an employee at a growing gym and be honest with yourself as you evaluate as to whether or not this applies to you. If not, it's time to re-assess your approach at work so that you can shift into what this author calls a "HIPO" role in your operation.
- The Race to the Bottom - You may think that this Seth Godin blog post is about pricing strategy upon first glance at the title, but it is instead about your marketing strategy. The primary takeaway here is that consistently delivering quality content to people that want to see it far outweighs edgy headlines and
shocking content in the long run. This is exactly why I published a blog titled "Gym Owner Musings -- Installment #17" this week instead of going with "Blast the Competition With This Insane Customer Feedback Collection Technique!"
- Why Even New Grads Need to Reskill for the Future - The mindset illustrated in this great HBR article is exactly why my business is able to maintain an ongoing competitive edge in our local gym market for what has now been a decade-plus of operation. If you embrace the mentality that you're never done
learning, you'll never put yourself in a position to be passed by the up and coming new gym owner down the road.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend.
- Pete
