Here's some recommended reading to either wrap up your week, or kick off your weekend.
Let's start things off with a blog I published on my own website:
- Appreciating the Distinction Between Quitting and Moving On - I recently listened to a fascinating podcast where a woman named Marie Forleo mentioned the common failure to understand the difference between quitting and simply walking away from an endeavor at the right time. This got me to
thinking about the frequency with which gym owners make this very mistake, so I started writing...
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- 5 Types of Employees Could Be Wreaking Havoc on Your Business. How to Handle the Drama - I've employed each of the five types of employees highlighted in this article, with varying degrees of associated headaches. While it
is difficult to anticipate many of these tendencies during the hiring and talent evaluation process, it is immensely important to identify these trends early in the employment relationship and address them quickly. I was especially fascinated with something called "The Peter Principle," mentioned in part-two of this five-part post.
- The Real Reason Apple and Google Still Hold Big Launch Events - This was a fascinating read discussing the true intentions behind elaborate product launches in the tech space. The author explains: "To keep their position in the digital market, these
companies not only need to design sophisticated hardware and software, they also need to nurture the myth that we live in a state of incessant revolution of which they are the key engine." It isn't outrageous to imagine a time where the next "big" fitness product or accessory is rolled out in a dramatic fashion via a live event of this nature. Maybe I can convince my buddy Ben Bruno to put on jeans and a black turtleneck and step on stage to roll out his next landmine extension to much
fanfare.
- Salesforce Founder Marc Benioff On Attracting the Best and Brightest - This piece discusses the role that volunteer work plays in the development of Salesforce, a company with a $120B valuation. My wife is an
employee of Salesforce, and does in fact take full advantage of these opportunities to volunteer while "on the clock," allowing her to contribute at our son's elementary school by helping out in the school library on Wednesday mornings. This "perk" of doing good is one that you could easily integrate into your own fitness operation if you've got employees who appreciate the value in giving back to worthy causes.
- 5 Simple Rules for Strategy Execution - Ideas are useless without execution, and this HBR article presents some tools you can use to ensure that you jump from concept to execution before the next staff meeting that will deliver a whole new series of ambitious
initiatives that may or may not be prioritized moving forward.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend.
- Pete
