Happy holidays, friends. Here's your 51st edition of 2019 recommended reading to either wrap up your week, or kick off your weekend.
Let's start things off with a blog I published on my own website:
- 3 Types of Networks Every Gym Owner Needs - Back in '14 my business partner left MA to get a second CSP facility up and running down in FL. When that happened I lost my usual day-to-day sounding board as it relates to running the business for
as many as seven months of the year. This week's blog discusses the collection of people I have unofficially employed to help fill the gaps in this capacity during the time since.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- Move Over, Work-Life Balance. Hello, Work-Life ‘Integration’ - I'm a big proponent for chasing work-life balance, while also sympathetic to the fact that it isn't attainable 100% of the time as a business owner. My buddy Alwyn Cosgrove recently
said to me that there is no balance, just a swinging pendulum that is constantly adjusting, which I believe to be the best description of the concept I've come across. This was a good article on the topic.
- The 7 Deadly LinkedIn Sins - Don't let the title fool you...this is really the seven deadly sins of all things networking and job hunting. If you want to achieve actual engagement and productivity from your strategic outreach on every web-based platform, you can start by
eliminating all seven of these terrible habits.
- Here's Why You Should Swear at Work, According to Science - I've yet to come across a gym that successfully enforces a no-swearing rule with clients. This being said, there are plenty out there, mine included, that are not willing to bend on allowing staff members to take
liberties with using colorful language. Maybe we need to reconsider our policy?
- Writing About Business (Without Being a Bore) - According to this article, only 16% of readers read every word of the text they're consuming. I guess this means I have to put serious thought into making all of my material "scannable." This Harvard Business Review article on writing
is about as information-packed as an entire book on improving your writing skills. These lessons are not limited to business writing, as all would be useful in fitness blogging, creating informational Instagram content, etc.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend.
- Pete
