Here's some recommended reading to either wrap up your week, or kick off your weekend.
Let's start things off with a blog I published on my own website:
- Great Coaches are Hard to Find, and it's Partially Your Fault - Every gym owner out there feels as if he deserves to employ world-class coaches, but most of us aren't offering opportunities that qualify as anything near world-class. Here's my brief rant on what
it takes to attract ambitious and qualified strength coaches to work in your business.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance - as always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- Forget Finding a Mentor—This is a Better Way to Help Your Career - There's an immensely important lesson in here: Mentorship opportunity is situated all around you just about every day you step into the office. Learning from your peers is often under appreciated in relation to identifying a
supposed guru who is destined to change your professional direction for the better.
- New Overtime Rules Start January 1, 2020. Are You Ready? - I hope employers in the fitness space realize how huge this shift in overtime laws is in relation to fitness businesses. The reality is that many of the coaches in our field are earning less than $35,548/year, while still being
expected to put in more than 40 hours of work per week. If you have coaches on your team who fall below that compensation number but tip-toe the line of a 40-hour work week, you can expect your payroll figures to creep up in the new year. For the record, I don't hate this new legislation.
- Art Williams—Accomplishing Impossible Goals (Podcast) - I enjoyed this old-school coach and business owner's message so much that I listened to this keynote from start to finish twice in a 24 hour span this week. The unfortunate reality is that his tough approach would likely result in a firing at the high school sports level these days
thanks to the insane parent feedback climate I've observed in running my business for the past 12+ years, but I would give anything for my boys to play for and learn from a guy like this.
- 3 Ways to Motivate Your Sales Team — Without Stressing Them Out - If you're the manager of a team of trainers who are expected to generate business on a busy commercial gym floor, you're going to want to read this one. Motivating coaches to hustle for leads is a challenging game, and this piece
explains how to attack the challenge without pushing coaches into a state of anxiety.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend.
- Pete
