Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance. As always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- Employment-at-Will Does Not Mean What You Think It Means - The concept of employment-at-will varies from one state to the next and is often misinterpreted by us gym owners. Is vacation considered earned
income that needs to be paid out to employees who quit in your state? Should I have a consistent system in place that allows for verbal warning, followed by a written warning, followed by termination in the case that I decide to let an employee go? This shares a whole lot of additional valuable information of this nature.
- Why Every Professional Should Recruit a Personal Board of Advisors - This might sound like a bit of an intimidating project to tackle, but your framework is likely already partially in place and being practiced if you make a habit of nurturing your own network on a
day-to-day basis. If you don't, it's well worth getting started the moment you finish consuming this week's Friday 4 reading list.
- 24 Pesky Tax Filing Mistakes That Cost Small Business Owners - I sincerely hope you're not handling all of your own tax filing procedures if you're a small gym owner (unless you were formerly a CPA). If you are, I'd
strongly encourage you to hire a professional. If you've already got a trusted advisor, you might want to ask him/her about some or all of the potential mistakes and missed opportunities outlined in this quick Forbes article.
- Don’t Quit Your Job Before Asking Yourself These Questions - This was a great read about the importance of routinely (they suggest annually) evaluating your job satisfaction and professional trajectory instead of only considering your role at times when
you feel backed into a corner and in need of an exit strategy. You're more likely to find happiness and success when leaving a role if it is in order to advance your career than you will in trying to escape an undesirable situation.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend.
