Thanks for opening up this edition of the Friday Four. Let's get things started by sharing one of my more popular blog posts in recent years:
- Will the Approaching Recession Bury Your Fitness Business? - I published this one in July of 2019, long before any of us had kicked around the idea of surviving a global pandemic. Needless to say, a recession has arrived, and the term "depression" is likely more apt at this
moment in time based on the path we seem to be headed down. It's too early to tell if this blog post holds up, but for now I'll just put it on your radar.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance. As always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- How to Plan For a Future Nobody Can Plan For - We may not know when our gyms will open next, but that doesn't mean we should avoid asking ourselves how we'll attack the return process the moment it happens. I
like the suggestion in this post of breaking this into worst, not completely terrible, and best case scenarios and begin working from there.
- How to Lead in a Crisis - I'll bet this will be the only article written on crisis survival tips where the lessons are founded entirely in comparisons between Napoleon Bonaparte's wartime decision making and Taiwan's response to the Coronavirus. If you're a fan of the
"do this, not that" approach to teaching, you'll love this one. Special thanks to Friday 4 reader, Bob Panico, for putting this one on my radar.
- How to Sell Ethically During a Crisis - One could certainly make the argument that the words "during a crisis" could be carved off of the end of this title and carry the lessons forward well past these strange times. Outside of questions
regarding the PPP Loans (my business wasn't one of the lucky ones), the most common question I've been receiving from fellow gym owners is whether or not it is appropriate to market our services at this point in time. The short answer is YES, so long as you take the approach shared in this piece.
- How I Built This - Sweetgreen (podcast) - The How I Built This Podcast was my primary inspiration for starting a one of my own in recent months, and this episode is a great example of why. This edition shares an inside look at the
origin story of this hugely successful business, followed by the founders explaining exactly how they are pivoting operations thanks to COVID-19. If nothing else, listen to the last ten minutes to be reminded that, no matter how much success and trust you believe yourself to have earned to date, you're going to run into hesitation and push-back from other decision-makers in your organization when the time comes to make some big changes.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend.
- Pete
