Thanks for opening up this edition of the Friday Four. Let's get things started by sharing a blog post from my own personal archives:
- Trusting the New Coach - A Challenging Conversation With Clients - This was a post that resonated with many gym owners when I first published it in 2019 because it addressed a problem we all face. We're all quick to consider the logistical challenges of
educating a coach on systems and philosophy during the on-boarding process, but how many of us think strategically about how we handle the optics of bringing on a new team member in the eyes of our clients?
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance. As always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- The Importance of Looking Upstream (EntreLeadership Podcast) - Interested in the takeaways from Dan Heath's new book, Upstream, but don't find yourself swimming in free time to read? If so, you're going to love this podcast episode. The majority of my
favorite takeaways from the book are touched on (and in many cases elaborated on) during this fascinating conversation.
- The Messy Middle (Book) - This book by Scott Belsky reminded me a lot of one of my 2019 favorites, The Hard Thing About Hard Things. I'm apparently drawn to authors who are just as quick to point out their mistakes along the way as they are to
highlight their wins. If you're a gym owner who has survived lease number one, but now feel like the new business shine has worn off, you'll probably appreciate Belsky's take on surviving and thriving in what he refers to as the middle years.
- Why Businesses Should Ignore Trump's Payroll Tax Holiday - I jumped on the PPP offering just like tens of thousands of other small business owners earlier this spring, and the loan forgiveness process, while not fully up and running, seems
at least somewhat manageable. This payroll tax holiday, however, appears to be a ticking time bomb that could cause a great deal of stress and confusion for both the business owner and the employee. Proceed with caution, according to the experts interviewed for this Inc. article.
- Google’s Quest to Build a Better Boss - This article is nearly a decade old, but just as relevant today as the day it was published. You might be surprised to learn that, according to an incredibly in-depth study at google, employees tend to
rank the technical capabilities of their managers as dead last on the eight categories considered when creating an ideal boss. The takeaway: You don't need to be the best strength coach in the gym to be the best leader of coaches.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend.
- Pete
