Thanks for opening up this edition of the Friday Four. Let's get things started by sharing the latest episode of my podcast, Niched:
- How Many Social Media Followers Are "Enough?" - Jordan Syatt - Jordan Syatt is the ever so rare Instagram fitness "influencer" who got his 10,000+ hours of in-person coaching in before beginning to position himself as an expert on social media. In this
conversation we took an in-depth look at the decade of his career preceding his immense social media audience growth. I think you'll appreciate his takes on the point of diminishing returns in audience growth, and the realistic amount of time it takes to capture a niche in the fitness industry.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance. As always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- Asking This Question During an Interview Can Wreck Your Shot at Getting the Job - I'm sympathetic to both sides of the dreaded compensation question in the interview context, as I've both hunted for jobs
myself, and offered them from the perspective of the employer. My attitude is that asking about compensation during an initial interview is 100% acceptable, so long as you position it in the conversation in a way that does not make it the primary topic. When I imagine "good questions" from a candidate, they have nothing to do with the wage or total vacation days.
- Businesses Shouldn't Have to Be the Mask Police - I'm not looking to debate politics in my weekly newsletter, so please don't interpret this share as a statement advocating for, or belittling the recommendation of mask use. The
reason this article resonated with me is that I'm tired of ambiguity relating to social distancing protocols that would allow for resisting mask use, and inconsistencies in how each state's policies can be interpreted. Either you tell us small business owners we have to mandate it 100% of the time, or you don't at all.
- Setting the Record Straight on Switching Jobs - There are some great takes on commonly accepted wisdom relating to resume gaps, job jumping, and more in this five year old Harvard Business Review article. The majority of the piece has aged well
since 2015, with the exception of the opening explaining how candidates hold the power in the job hunting market. With unemployment setting record highs and a considerable amount of America's small businesses teetering on the brink of failure, it would be crazy to call the current job market anything but terrifying.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend.
- Pete
