Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance. As always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- The Stolen Address Book - Seth Godin is back to show you exactly why word of mouth advertising will be your best path to business development in this quick read. Fun fact: Cressey Sports Performance has spent less than $500 on Facebook and Google advertising in the 14
years that we've been open.
- The Day You Became A Better Writer - I'm disappointed that it took me 13+ years to discover this post on the mechanics of writing persuasive blogs. Hopefully you can forgive me for having routinely made many of the mistakes mentioned here in
prior newsletters. I'll do better moving forward.
- Simon Sinek's Advice to Leaders: Check In. And Truly Listen - The suggested leadership habits in this article are positioned as crisis-specific, but all will prove to be useful whether you're enduring a pandemic or not. The most important takeaway to me
was the reminder that I shouldn't be afraid to admit to my team that I don't have all of the answers in times of uncertainty. Sinek says: "What would you do for a friend? Do that for your people. Listen."
- This is Water - I came across references to this 2005 Kenyon College commencement lecture delivered by David Foster Wallace on two separate occasions this past week, and on what feels like a dozen other occasions in years past. Well I finally took the plunge, and now
understand the hype. Check out the audio (or the transcript if you'd like to read) and you'll see why it is still accumulating views, reads and listens all these years later.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend.
