Thanks for opening up this edition of the Friday Four. Let's get things started by sharing a blog post from my own personal archives:
- Tackling the Cranky Local Football Coach Conundrum - This post was inspired by conversations with a handful of gym owners in Texas who find themselves competing with the local high school weight room and the mandatory team training sessions associated with
it.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance. As always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- Managers: These are 5 Skills Your Employees Wish You Had - While I am not entirely lacking in any of these five skills, I certainly have room for improvement in each category. Pay close attention to number two, which discusses our
responsibility as employers to assist in developing skills for roles that may not currently exist in our organization. Our employees are counting on us to put them in the best position possible to thrive long-term, even if that means making them marketable to opportunities outside of our business.
- 7 Interview Questions for Any Prospective Employee - We hire based on competency and fit at CSP. Competency is relatively easy to identify with an appropriately detailed resume. Fit, on the other hand, is especially challenging to ensure without the benefit of a 300-500 hour
internship. This article outlines a series of valuable interview questions that can help you to make better decisions on fit without the benefit of an extended internship vetting period.
- This Texas Quilt Shop Can Teach a Master Class in Winning Over Customers - I'm a sucker for a business story featuring an operation that has figured out how to take a relatively commoditized concept and turn it into a destination experience. If a quilting
supply retailer in an 1,800 person community figured out how to build a destination service experience that attracts customers from all over the country, there's no reason why you can't get creative with attracting interest to your fitness business.
- Statement by Jeff Bezos to the U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary - I should warn you up front that this is a long (15-min) read. Back in late-July, Jeff Bezos delivered a speech to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary
Subcommittee relating to Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law. While he obviously showed up to protect the interests of his own business, he also delivered a masterclass on how to build a community-serving and customer-centric operation that scales. Pour yourself a cup of coffee and find some time to bang this one out this weekend.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend.
- Pete
