Thanks for opening up this edition of the Friday Four. Let's get things started by sharing a blog post from my own personal archives:
- 3 Reasons to Build a Robust Internship Program at Your Gym - We've seen a fair amount of turnover here at CSP Massachusetts in 2020 thanks to one staff member accepting a role to work alongside Eric in the Yankees organization, and another making the move
down to our Florida facility to help round out their staff as business continues to grow. Without an internship program, this would have resulted in a ton of stress for me. Instead, we went into the existing intern alumni candidate pool and identified some rockstars ready to take on the roles.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance. As always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- Burger King Asks You to Buy From McDonald's - You might first interpret this headline as a gimmicky way of trolling a competitor, but it is instead the exact opposite. Burger King is beginning to realize the importance of maintaining the significance of its category as a whole,
and we're now at a point in time where all fast food operations need to acknowledge the fact that what's good for the competition is probably good for everyone. All of us in fitness should take a page out of their book. Please continue to use the social mediate audience you have to scale the message that any fitness is better than no fitness at all.
- Phil Knight on How to Sell Without Selling (podcast) - I'm a sucker for a good origin story, and this one did not disappoint. If you read and enjoyed Phil Knight's Shoe Dog, I think you'll like hearing him recount his business' beginnings in this conversation with Reid
Hoffman.
- Watch Bill Gates Give Brilliant 30-Sec Answers To Common Job Interview Questions - I never thought I'd have the opportunity to observe this iconic business leader
play the role of a candidate sitting to interview for a junior level role within his operation. My assumption coming in was that he'd come across as out of touch after decades of functioning in the C-Suite. Instead, he gave a master class on delivering thoughtful and comprehensive answers that would make him difficult not to choose if I were the hiring manager in question.
- A Covid-19 Vaccine Looks Promising. Can You Require Employees to Take It? - The answer to this one, in short, is "we're not sure yet." However, there are some useful pieces of advice relating to how you can go about discussing the vaccine, explaining
expectations, and loosely enforcing an agreed upon policy in your workplace at the point in time when vaccinations are proven to be viable and generally available.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend.
- Pete
