Thanks for opening up this edition of the Friday Four. Let's get things started with a popular blog post from my own personal archives:
- We Waited 7 Years to Open a Second Location…Here’s Why - I encounter questions relating to expanding from one to two locations just about very single time I host a "gym owner Q&A" on my Instagram account. Instead of pretending that I am some sort of specialist on the topic, I
typically share this article explaining why it took us a little longer than maybe others expected to pull the trigger on the move.
My Friday FOUR:
Four pieces of content I've consumed this past week that will influence my future blog material and challenge me to think differently about how I manage Cressey Sports Performance. As always, I'm looking to bring you some business-specific information from outside of the world of fitness. Enjoy:
- Why Winning Doesn't Always Equal Success (podcast) - If every employer in the fitness industry were to listen to this TED Talk and take
action on the advice, we'd collectively be far better bosses and leaders of people. We've all got self-awareness work to do, including legendary collegiate coaches who have accumulated all of the accolades one could ever imagine.
- 3 Reasons You Should Buy a Business Now - There are plenty of trainers out there talking about opening their own gym, but few who are entertaining the idea of acquiring one. Why not save yourself a ton of money and purchase a business that is either
struggling, or simply being operated by a tired gym owner who wants out? I promise you'd reduce costs by avoiding investing in full-priced flooring and equipment by going this route, and you'd likely start with a handful of existing clients to try to win over. This article shares some insights on how to best go about that process.
- How Ryan Reynolds' Marketing Agency Keeps Making Viral Hits - My favorite takeaway from this interview with Ryan Reynolds: If you're not telling stories, you're simply broadcasting, which doesn't lead to engagement. If you already resented him for his talent, success, and handsomeness, you're
going to feel even more grumpy upon learning that Reynolds is also a marketing guru.
- How Virtual Onboarding is Failing Employees - Virtual onboarding has become a necessity in many of our fitness businesses. Some of us are taking on new online coaching support, and others are introducing incoming interns remotely in order to accelerate the acclimation
process and minimize closed-door office time spent educating. This new approach to bringing on new team members is not likely to go away, so we've got to ask ourselves where we might be underserving our newest colleagues during the process.
Make sure to let me know if you come across any material that you think I'd enjoy. More importantly, have a great weekend.
- Pete
